If you hold a British passport and are planning to move to Australia, you have probably heard that you do not need an English test. That is partly true. UK citizens are treated as having the minimum level of English required for most Australian skilled visas without sitting a test. However, the exemption only covers the minimum. For many skilled visa applicants, skipping an English test means giving up the very points that decide whether they are invited.
This 2026 guide explains exactly what the Australia PR English test exemption for UK citizens covers, when you still need a test, the current score thresholds after the August 2025 changes, and how English rules apply to partners, skills assessments, professional registration and state nomination. For background on how English fits into the wider points test, see our Australia PR points system guide.
The Short Answer: Do UK Citizens Need an English Test for Australia PR?
To meet the minimum English requirement for points-tested skilled visas, the answer is no. Citizens of the United Kingdom who hold a valid UK passport are treated as having competent English, which is the minimum level for the Skilled Independent (Subclass 189), Skilled Nominated (Subclass 190) and Skilled Work Regional (Subclass 491) visas.
To claim English points, the answer is yes. Competent English earns zero points. To claim 10 points for proficient English or 20 points for superior English, you must provide results from an approved English test, even with a UK passport.
Which Passports Qualify for the Exemption?
Home Affairs accepts a valid passport from the following countries as evidence of competent English, provided you are a citizen of that country:
- United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
- United States of America
- Canada
- New Zealand
- Republic of Ireland
The passport must be valid. If your UK passport has expired, renew it before relying on it as evidence. Dual citizens can use their UK passport for this purpose even if they also hold another nationality. Our guide on living in Australia with a British passport explains what your passport does and does not allow.
Why Competent English Is Often Not Enough
The points test awards English points as follows:
| English level | How UK citizens can prove it | Points |
|---|---|---|
| Competent | Valid UK passport, or a test result | 0 |
| Proficient | Approved English test only | 10 |
| Superior | Approved English test only | 20 |
Recent invitation rounds show why this matters. Many occupations have needed 80 to 95 points or more for a Subclass 189 invitation. For a typical UK applicant, the 20 points from superior English are often the single largest gain available. A native speaker who relies only on their passport may be leaving 20 points unclaimed.
Here is a simple example for a 31-year-old UK engineer with a bachelor’s degree, six years of experience and no partner:
| Factor | Passport only | With superior English test |
|---|---|---|
| Age | 30 | 30 |
| English | 0 | 20 |
| Qualification | 15 | 15 |
| Overseas experience | 10 | 10 |
| Single | 10 | 10 |
| Total | 65 | 85 |
At 65 points, this applicant meets the legal minimum but is unlikely to be invited in most occupations. At 85 points, they become competitive in many more. Accepted English Tests in 2026
Since 7 August 2025, Home Affairs accepts results from a specific list of tests, and every test must be taken in person at a secure test centre. Online or at-home versions are not accepted. The accepted tests include:
- IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training
- PTE Academic
- TOEFL iBT (taken at a test centre)
- Occupational English Test (OET), designed for health professionals
- CELPIP General
- LanguageCert Academic
- Michigan English Test (MET), not accepted for superior English
- Cambridge C1 Advanced, accepted under transitional rules for tests taken before 7 August 2025
Check the Home Affairs English language page for the latest list and any test-specific rules before you book.
Score Thresholds After the August 2025 Changes
The August 2025 changes kept IELTS thresholds the same but introduced new component-specific scores for PTE Academic and some other tests. Every component must meet the minimum; an overall average is not enough.
| Level | IELTS (each component) | PTE Academic, tests from 7 August 2025 (L / R / W / S) | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Competent | 6.0 | 47 / 48 / 51 / 54 | 0 |
| Proficient | 7.0 | 58 / 59 / 69 / 76 | 10 |
| Superior | 8.0 | 69 / 70 / 85 / 88 | 20 |
For PTE, the writing and speaking thresholds are now noticeably higher than listening and reading, especially at superior level. Native speakers sometimes underperform in PTE speaking because of the computer-scored format, so practise with the test’s specific tasks. Our guide to the PTE score needed for Australia PR explains the format in more detail.
Older Test Results
Tests taken on or before 6 August 2025 are assessed against the previous score tables. They may remain usable until 6 August 2028, subject to the normal validity rule for each visa. For points-tested skilled visas, your test generally needs to have been taken within three years before your invitation.
English Rules for Your Partner
If you are applying with a spouse or de facto partner, English affects your application in two ways.
Partner Points
You can claim:
- 5 points if your partner has competent English, is under 45 and is not an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
- 10 points if your partner also has a positive skills assessment in an occupation on the same list as yours and meets the age requirement.
A UK passport-holding partner can generally prove competent English through their passport, which makes partner points easier to claim.
Functional English for Secondary Applicants
Every family member aged 18 or over included in your application must show functional English, or you must pay a second visa application charge for each person who does not. A valid UK, US, Canadian, New Zealand or Irish passport is accepted as evidence of functional English, so British partners and adult children normally meet this without a test.

When UK Citizens Still Need an English Test
Even with a UK passport, you may need a test for reasons beyond visa points.
Skills Assessing Authorities
Some assessing authorities have their own English requirements, separate from Home Affairs. Engineers Australia, for example, sets its own English evidence rules for migration skills assessments, although exemptions may apply depending on where you studied. Our guide to Australia PR for civil engineers from the UK discusses the Engineers Australia process.
Professional Registration
Health professionals must meet the English language registration standard set by their national board through Ahpra. This is separate from visa English requirements. Many UK-trained health professionals meet it through their education in a recognised country, but the exact rules depend on the board and your history. Our guide on becoming a registered nurse in Australia from overseas explains this for nurses.
State Nomination Requirements
Some states and territories require proficient English or higher for certain occupations or for offshore applicants, even though Home Affairs only requires competent English. In these cases, your passport is not enough to meet the state’s criteria. Our guide to Australia 190 visa requirements for UK applicants explains how state criteria work.
Claiming Points
As explained above, you need a test result to claim any English points.
English Exemptions for Other Australian Visas
| Visa | English requirement | UK passport exemption? |
|---|---|---|
| Skilled 189, 190, 491 | Competent English | Yes, for the minimum requirement |
| Employer Nomination Scheme (186) | Competent English | Yes |
| Skills in Demand (482) | Visa-specific minimum | Generally yes, for passport holders of listed countries |
| Temporary Graduate (485) | Visa-specific minimum | Yes, for passport holders of listed countries |
| Partner visas | No English requirement for the applicant | Not applicable |
| Secondary applicants (adults) | Functional English or second VAC | Yes |
For example, partner visas do not require the applicant to prove English. Learn more on our partner visa for Australia page.
Is an English Test Worth It for a Native Speaker?
For most UK skilled visa applicants, yes. Consider a test if:
- your points are below recent invitation scores for your occupation
- you are applying for the Subclass 189 visa, where every point counts
- your target state requires proficient or superior English
- you want to keep options open as the points test is redesigned
You may not need a test if:
- your points are already well above recent cut-offs without English points
- you are applying through employer sponsorship, where competent English is enough
- you are applying for a visa with no English points, such as a partner visa
If you sit a test and miss superior by a narrow margin, it is often worth retaking. Our guide on overcoming English test setbacks for Australia PR has practical tips. For other ways to raise your score, see how to improve your Australia PR points before invitation.
Common Mistakes UK Applicants Make
| Mistake | Consequence |
|---|---|
| Assuming the passport earns English points | Claims 10 or 20 points that cannot be supported, risking refusal |
| Relying on an expired passport | Evidence of competent English may not be accepted |
| Taking an at-home online test | Results are not accepted for Australian visas |
| Using old PTE score tables for a new test | Overestimates your English level |
| Ignoring state or registration English rules | Ineligible for nomination or professional registration |
| Letting test results expire before invitation | Loses English points when you need them most |
Looking Ahead: The Points Test Redesign
The Australian Government has announced a redesign of the skilled migration points test, which aims to select younger, more highly educated and higher-skilled migrants. Final details and a start date had not been confirmed at the time of writing. English is likely to remain an important factor, so a strong test result is a sensible investment for most UK applicants. Our guide on how to get an Australia PR invitation from the UK covers the current invitation landscape.
After PR: English and Citizenship
Once you become a permanent resident and later apply for Australian citizenship, you will usually need to pass the citizenship test, which assesses knowledge of Australia and requires a working understanding of English. This is separate from visa English requirements. Our guide on how soon UK citizens can apply for Australian citizenship after PR explains the timeline.
