Can UK Work Experience Count for Australia PR in 2026?

Can UK Work Experience Count for Australia PR in 2026

For most skilled professionals moving from Britain, work experience is one of the biggest sources of points on Australia’s skilled migration points test. The good news is that yes, UK work experience can count towards Australian permanent residency. The more complicated part is that not every year you have worked will necessarily count. How many years are recognised depends on your occupation, your skills assessment, your working hours and the evidence you can provide.

This 2026 guide explains how UK work experience for Australia PR is assessed, how many points it can earn, the rules that most often reduce the years counted, and the documents you need. For an overview of the full PR process, see our Australian permanent residency services.

The Short Answer

Yes. Experience gained in the UK is treated as overseas skilled employment under Australia’s points test. It can earn up to 15 points, provided it:

  • is in your nominated occupation or a closely related occupation
  • was paid work of at least 20 hours per week
  • falls within the 10 years before you are invited to apply
  • is recognised as skilled by your assessing authority
  • can be supported by reliable evidence

Experience that does not meet these conditions may still be valuable for your career, but it will not earn points.

How Many Points Can UK Experience Earn?

The points test treats overseas and Australian experience separately:

Overseas skilled employment (including UK) Points
Less than 3 years 0
At least 3 but less than 5 years 5
At least 5 but less than 8 years 10
At least 8 years 15
Australian skilled employment Points
Less than 1 year 0
At least 1 but less than 3 years 5
At least 3 but less than 5 years 10
At least 5 but less than 8 years 15
At least 8 years 20

Points from overseas and Australian experience combined are capped at 20. For most UK applicants who have not yet worked in Australia, the maximum available from experience is 15 points. Our Australia PR points system guide explains how experience fits alongside other factors.

The 3-Year Threshold Matters

UK experience earns nothing until you have at least three years of recognised skilled employment. Someone with two years and eleven months of counted experience receives zero points for it. If you are close to a threshold, waiting a few months before your invitation can be worthwhile, but you must update your EOI when your points increase.

Rule 1: The Experience Must Match Your Nominated Occupation

You can only claim points for work in your nominated occupation or a closely related occupation. Home Affairs generally treats an occupation as closely related if it is in the same ANZSCO unit group, or if it reflects a genuine career progression within your field.

Your job title matters less than your duties. A UK “project lead” in software development may still be assessed as a Software Engineer if the duties match. A role with mainly management or administrative duties may not count towards a technical occupation, even in the same company.

Examples of how this works in practice:

  • A civil engineer’s earlier years as a graduate engineer generally count, if they were assessed as skilled.
  • An accountant who moved into a general operations management role may not have that later experience counted as accounting.
  • A nurse who worked as a healthcare assistant before qualifying will not usually have the pre-qualification years counted as nursing.

Rule 2: The 20-Hour-Per-Week Threshold

For points purposes, Home Affairs considers employment to be skilled only if you worked at least 20 hours per week and were paid for it. Part-time work of 20 hours or more can count. Work below that level does not count, however long you did it.

Some assessing authorities also refuse to combine two part-time roles to reach 20 hours, so each role should meet the threshold on its own. Unpaid work, volunteering and positions paid only with a minimal allowance or scholarship are generally not treated as paid skilled employment.

What About Leave and Career Breaks?

Normal paid leave within continuous employment usually does not interrupt your skilled employment. Long periods of unpaid leave, career breaks or gaps between jobs do not count. Make sure your reference letters and CV show accurate dates.

Rule 3: Your Assessing Authority Decides When You Became Skilled

This is the rule that surprises most UK applicants. Your skills assessment does more than confirm your qualifications. Many assessing authorities also decide the date from which your employment is considered skilled. Experience before that date does not earn points, even though you were working.

Common examples include:

Assessing authority How it treats experience
Australian Computer Society (ICT) Commonly deducts two years for applicants with a closely related ICT major, and longer where the qualification is less closely related
Engineers Australia Assesses relevant employment separately and may not count all years claimed
VETASSESS Generally considers employment after you obtained a qualification at the required level, and at the required skill level
Accounting bodies (CPA Australia, CA ANZ, IPA) May assess employment separately from the qualification
Teaching and health authorities Often count experience only after qualification or registration

For example, a UK software engineer with eight years of experience and an ICT degree may have only six years counted after an ACS deduction. That moves their points from 15 to 10. Our guides to Australia PR for cyber security engineers and Australia PR for civil engineers explain how the ACS and Engineers Australia approach this.

Always claim experience based on the dates shown in your skills assessment outcome, not your full CV. Our skills assessment guide for Australia PR covers each authority in more detail.

Rule 4: Only the Last 10 Years Count

Points are calculated on skilled employment within the 10 years before your invitation to apply. If you have a long career, your earliest years may fall outside this window as time passes. This rarely reduces points for applicants with steady recent employment, but it matters for those who took career breaks or changed fields.

Rule 5: Points Are Calculated at the Time of Invitation

Your experience points are assessed at the date you are invited, not when you first lodged your Expression of Interest (EOI). This works both ways:

  • Your experience may increase while you wait in the pool, moving you into a higher points band. Update your EOI promptly, because a delay can cost you ranking.
  • Experience that is still being gained after the skilled date in your assessment may need further evidence when you apply.
  • If your age band changes downward around the same time, your total points may stay the same or fall, so plan carefully. See our article on the maximum age for Australia PR from the UK.

Evidence UK Applicants Should Prepare

Strong evidence is essential, because your experience is checked twice: once by your assessing authority and again by Home Affairs when you apply for the visa.

Employer Reference Letters

Each letter should be on company letterhead and signed by a manager or HR representative. It should include:

  • your exact job title and employment dates (day, month and year)
  • whether the role was full-time or part-time, with hours per week
  • a detailed list of your duties, ideally reflecting your nominated occupation’s tasks
  • your salary
  • the signatory’s name, position and contact details

Supporting Financial Evidence

  • payslips covering the employment period
  • P60s for each tax year
  • your HMRC employment history, available through your personal tax account
  • employment contracts and any promotion or role change letters
  • P45s where you left an employer

If Your Employer Will Not Provide a Detailed Letter

Some UK employers only confirm dates and job titles. In this case, a statutory declaration describing your duties, supported by a basic employer confirmation and strong payroll evidence, may be accepted by some assessing authorities. Check your authority’s specific requirements.

Self-Employed and Contractor Experience

Self-employment and contracting can count, but the evidence must be more detailed. It may include:

  • SA302 tax calculations and tax year overviews
  • Companies House records for limited companies
  • client contracts and invoices
  • business bank statements
  • letters from clients describing the work you carried out
  • accountant’s letters confirming your business activity

Our article on avoiding rejection due to missing or incorrect documents explains common evidence errors.

Can Experience Gained in Australia Count Too?

Yes. Paid skilled employment in Australia counts separately as Australian experience and can earn up to 20 points. Some young UK applicants gain this through the Working Holiday visa (Subclass 417), provided the work is in their nominated or a closely related occupation, meets the 20-hour threshold and is assessed as skilled.

Remember that the combined maximum for overseas and Australian experience is 20 points. Someone with eight years of UK experience (15 points) and one year of Australian experience (5 points) reaches the cap.

What About UK Graduate Visa Holders?

International graduates working in the UK on the Graduate visa can count their UK employment as overseas experience if it meets the same rules. Because they are often early in their careers, many will not yet reach the three-year threshold. Our guide on whether UK Graduate visa holders can apply for Australia PR explains the options.

Common Mistakes When Claiming UK Experience

Mistake Consequence
Claiming experience from before the assessed skilled date Overclaimed points, possible visa refusal
Counting part-time work under 20 hours per week Experience not recognised
Including roles in unrelated occupations Points disallowed
Generic reference letters listing only job titles Negative or reduced skills assessment
Not updating the EOI when a new threshold is reached Lost ranking in invitation rounds
Inconsistent dates between CV, references and HMRC records Credibility concerns and requests for more evidence

Claiming points you cannot prove is one of the most serious mistakes in skilled migration. If Home Affairs finds that you were invited based on points you did not have, your application can be refused, and you cannot simply recalculate after the invitation.

How Experience Fits Into Your Overall Strategy

For many UK applicants, experience points work alongside age, English and qualification points. If your experience falls just short of the next threshold, you may be able to close the gap through English points, partner points or state nomination. Our guide on how to improve your Australia PR points before invitation explains the options, and our Australia PR points calculator helps you estimate your score.

Some occupations also need very high scores. Our guide to Australia PR for accountants from the UK shows how experience points interact with competitive cut-offs. For the wider invitation picture, read how to get an Australia PR invitation from the UK.

Changes to Watch

The Australian Government has announced a redesign of the points test, aimed at selecting younger, more highly educated and higher-skilled migrants. The new points table and start date had not been confirmed at the time of writing, so the weighting of overseas experience could change. Applications are assessed under the rules in place at the time of invitation, so monitor official announcements if your plans extend into 2027.

Frequently asked questions

Overseas skilled employment earns 5 points for 3 to under 5 years, 10 points for 5 to under 8 years, and 15 points for 8 years or more.

Does part-time work in the UK count for Australia PR?

Part-time work can count if it was paid and at least 20 hours per week. Work below 20 hours per week does not count towards points.

Why did my skills assessment count fewer years than I worked?

Many assessing authorities only treat employment as skilled from a certain date, for example after qualification or after a standard deduction such as the two years commonly applied by ACS.

Can self-employment in the UK count for Australia PR?

Yes, if it meets the same rules. You will need stronger evidence, such as SA302s, Companies House records, client contracts, invoices and business bank statements.

Provide detailed employer reference letters plus supporting evidence such as payslips, P60s, HMRC employment history and employment contracts.

What if my UK employer only confirms dates and job title?

Is there a maximum number of points for work experience?

Yes. Combined overseas and Australian skilled employment points are capped at 20.

Does work experience before my degree count?

Usually not, if the assessing authority only recognises experience after you gained the qualification required for your occupation.

When are my work experience points calculated?

Points are calculated at the time you are invited to apply, so you should update your EOI whenever you reach a new experience threshold.

Can volunteer or unpaid work count for Australia PR?

No. Only paid employment of at least 20 hours per week counts towards skilled employment points.

Does work experience on a Working Holiday visa in Australia count?
