Accounting has long been one of the most popular occupations for skilled migration to Australia, and UK-qualified accountants are well regarded by Australian employers. ICAEW, ICAS, ACCA and CIMA qualifications are recognised internationally, and British accounting experience transfers well to Australian practice. However, popularity brings competition. If you are researching Australia PR for accountants from the UK in 2026, you need an honest picture of how invitation rounds have treated accountants and which strategies are most likely to succeed.
This guide covers the accounting occupations available for migration, how CPA Australia, CA ANZ and the Institute of Public Accountants (IPA) assess UK qualifications, the points you are likely to need, recent invitation trends, and the state nomination and employer-sponsored routes that are often more realistic. For an overview of permanent residency options, see our Australian permanent residency services.
Accounting Occupations for Australian Migration
Australia has several accounting and audit occupations, and choosing the one that genuinely matches your work can make a real difference to your options.
| Occupation | ANZSCO | Main lists | Points-tested visas | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Accountant (General) | 221111 | MLTSSL and CSOL | 189, 190, 491 | Very large applicant pool; 482/186 caveats apply |
| Management Accountant | 221112 | MLTSSL and CSOL | 189, 190, 491 | 482/186 caveats apply |
| Taxation Accountant | 221113 | MLTSSL and CSOL | 189, 190, 491 | 482/186 caveats apply |
| External Auditor | 221213 | MLTSSL and CSOL | 189, 190, 491 | No 482/186 caveats |
| Internal Auditor | 221214 | Check current lists | Check current lists | Often considered alongside External Auditor |
Occupation lists and caveats change. Always check the current Department of Home Affairs skilled occupation list.
An important point: your occupation must reflect your actual duties. A UK audit senior whose work is mainly external audit may fit External Auditor better than Accountant (General). Choosing a code only because it looks less competitive, when your duties do not match, can lead to a negative skills assessment.
How Competitive Is Accounting in 2026?
Accounting is currently one of the most competitive occupations in Australia’s skilled migration programme.
- Accountant (General) was last invited for the Subclass 189 visa on 7 November 2024, at a minimum of 95 points.
- It received no 189 invitations in the three federal rounds after that, including the June 2026 round.
- Earlier rounds in 2024 required between 95 and 100 points.
- As of September 2026, around 7,000 Expressions of Interest (EOIs) for Accountant (General) were waiting in the 189 pool, with more than 9,000 each for the 190 and 491 visas.
Management Accountant and Taxation Accountant have shown similar patterns, with no recent 189 invitations. For UK accountants, this means the 189 visa should be treated as a long shot rather than a plan. A combination of state nomination, regional options and employer sponsorship is usually more realistic. Our guide on how to get an Australia PR invitation from the UK explains how invitation rounds work.
Step 1: The Accounting Skills Assessment
Three bodies can assess accounting occupations for migration:
- CPA Australia
- Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ)
- Institute of Public Accountants (IPA)
All three are approved by Home Affairs, and UK applicants can choose any of them. Each sets its own detailed criteria, fees and processing times, so compare them before applying.
What the Assessment Looks At
Accounting assessments generally consider three main areas.
Qualification comparability: whether your qualification is comparable to at least an Australian bachelor’s degree.
Competency areas: whether your studies cover core accounting knowledge areas, typically including:
- financial accounting
- management accounting
- audit and assurance
- taxation
- business and corporate law
- finance
- economics
- accounting information systems
- quantitative methods
English language proficiency: the assessing body sets its own English requirement, which may be different from the visa requirement.
If your qualification does not cover every required area, you may need to complete additional subjects before receiving a positive outcome.
How UK Professional Qualifications Are Treated
Many UK accountants hold a professional qualification such as ACA (ICAEW), CA (ICAS), ACCA or CIMA, sometimes alongside a non-accounting degree. Assessing bodies may consider studies completed through a recognised professional accounting body. For example, CA ANZ may consider your professional body studies if you are a full member in good standing of a body recognised as comparable to an Australian bachelor’s degree.
When applying, provide your full professional body history, including membership certificates, exam transcripts and exemption records, not just your university degree.
Mutual Recognition Agreements Are Not the Same as a Skills Assessment
UK accounting bodies have various reciprocal or mutual recognition arrangements with Australian bodies. These can help you gain Australian professional membership more easily, which is valuable for your career. However, these arrangements are professional membership benefits. They do not automatically replace the migration skills assessment your visa requires.
English for the Skills Assessment
Accounting assessing bodies include English proficiency as part of their assessment. Some accept passport holders from certain English-speaking countries, while others may require an approved English test. Check the current requirements of your chosen body. Our guide to English test exemption rules for UK citizens explains how the visa English rules work.
For a broader guide to assessments, see our skills assessment guide for Australia PR. If your assessment comes back unsuccessful, read our article on what to do after a negative skills assessment.
Step 2: Assessing Your Employment Experience
To claim points for experience, your skilled employment must also be assessed. Provide detailed reference letters setting out your duties, hours, dates and seniority, supported by payslips, P60s or HMRC records. Our guide on how UK work experience counts for Australia PR explains how to present British employment.
Step 3: Calculating Your Points
With recent cut-offs of 95 points or more, accountants usually need to maximise every category. Here is an example of a strong UK applicant:
| Points factor | Example UK accountant | Points |
|---|---|---|
| Age | 30 years old | 30 |
| English | Superior test result | 20 |
| Qualification | Bachelor’s degree or recognised equivalent | 15 |
| Overseas experience | 8 years assessed as skilled | 15 |
| Partner | Single | 10 |
| Total | 90 |
Even this strong profile is below the 95 points needed when Accountant (General) was last invited. This shows why state nomination and other routes matter. A superior English score is essential, so see our guide to the PTE score needed for Australia PR. You can estimate your own score with our Australia PR points calculator. For practical ways to close a gap, read how to improve your Australia PR points before invitation.

Step 4: Choosing a Realistic Pathway
Subclass 189: Possible but Very Unlikely Right Now
Lodging a 189 EOI costs nothing and keeps the option open if invitation patterns change. However, with no recent invitations for the main accounting occupations, it should not be your only plan.
Subclass 190: State Nomination
Some states and territories include accounting occupations on their nomination lists, although many limit them to applicants already living and working in the state, or set high selection thresholds. The Subclass 190 Skilled Nominated visa adds 5 points and leads directly to PR. For offshore UK applicants, check each state’s current list and criteria carefully, as they change regularly.
Subclass 491: Regional Nomination
Regional areas sometimes have stronger demand for accountants, particularly in small practices and regional businesses. The Subclass 491 Skilled Work Regional visa adds 15 points and leads to PR through the Subclass 191 visa. However, regional visa places were cut significantly for 2026–27, so competition is strong.
Employer-Sponsored Visas
Accounting occupations appear on the Core Skills Occupation List, so Australian employers can sponsor accountants through the Skills in Demand visa (Subclass 482). This can later lead to PR through the Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186). Regional employers can also use the Subclass 494 visa.
Be aware that Accountant (General), Management Accountant and Taxation Accountant carry caveats for the 482 and 186 Direct Entry pathways. These place extra conditions on which employer nominations qualify. External Auditor does not carry these caveats. Our guide to jobs and salary expectations after Australia PR explains the Australian employment market.
Comparing Pathways for UK Accountants
| Pathway | Key requirement | Current outlook for accountants |
|---|---|---|
| Subclass 189 | Very high points | Weak; no recent invitations for main accounting codes |
| Subclass 190 | State nomination | Limited; often onshore-focused |
| Subclass 491 | Regional nomination | Possible but fewer places in 2026–27 |
| Subclass 482 to 186 | Employer sponsor | Realistic with a job offer; caveats for some codes |
| Subclass 494 | Regional employer sponsor | Useful for regional roles |
Alternative Strategies for UK Accountants
Check Whether Another Occupation Genuinely Fits
If your experience is mainly in audit, External Auditor or Internal Auditor may better describe your role. These occupations have different applicant pools and different employer-sponsored rules. The occupation must reflect your real duties and be supported by your references.
Consider Your Partner as the Main Applicant
If your partner works in an occupation with stronger invitation prospects, such as healthcare, engineering or a construction trade, it may be better for them to be the main applicant. You can then contribute partner points, potentially up to 10 if you hold a positive skills assessment.
Studying in Australia
Some accountants choose to study a relevant postgraduate course in Australia, which can add points and provide local experience. This is a significant investment and should only be chosen if you genuinely intend to study. Our guide on how to get PR in Australia after a study visa explains how this route works.
Common Mistakes UK Accountants Make
| Mistake | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Relying only on the 189 visa | The main accounting codes have not been invited recently |
| Assuming ACA or ACCA replaces the skills assessment | Mutual recognition arrangements are membership benefits, not migration assessments |
| Submitting only a degree certificate | Professional body studies may be needed to cover competency areas |
| Choosing a code that does not match your duties | Can lead to a negative assessment |
| Skipping an English test | Loses up to 20 points that accountants usually need |
| Ignoring 482/186 caveats | Employer nominations may not qualify |
Changes to Watch in 2026 and 2027
The Australian Government has announced a redesign of the skilled migration points test, aimed at younger, more highly educated and higher-skilled migrants. Final details and a start date had not been confirmed at the time of writing.
Accounting is not one of the priority sectors under the skilled visa processing directions that took effect on 19 September 2026, so processing may be slower than for priority occupations such as healthcare and construction. The 2026–27 Migration Programme also increased employer-sponsored places, which supports pursuing sponsorship alongside any points-tested application.

Frequently asked questions
Can UK accountants get Australia PR in 2026?
Yes, but it is highly competitive. Accounting occupations are eligible for points-tested and employer-sponsored visas, but the main accounting codes have not received recent 189 invitations, so state nomination and employer sponsorship are often more realistic.
When was Accountant (General) last invited for the 189 visa?
Accountant (General) was last invited for the Subclass 189 visa on 7 November 2024, at a minimum of 95 points, with no invitations in the three federal rounds since.
Which bodies assess accountants for Australian migration?
CPA Australia, Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ) and the Institute of Public Accountants (IPA) are all approved to assess accounting occupations for migration.
Does ACA or ACCA membership replace the Australian skills assessment?
No. Mutual recognition and reciprocal arrangements between UK and Australian bodies are professional membership benefits and do not automatically replace the migration skills assessment.
Can my ACCA or ICAEW studies count towards the accounting skills assessment?
They may. Assessing bodies can consider studies through a recognised professional accounting body, so include your full membership history, exam transcripts and exemptions with your application.
How many points do accountants need for Australia PR?
The minimum is 65, but when Accountant (General) was last invited for the 189 visa, the cut-off was 95 points. Most accountants need very high points or state nomination.
Is External Auditor easier than Accountant (General)?
External Auditor has a different applicant pool and does not carry the 482 and 186 caveats that apply to general, management and taxation accountants. It is only suitable if your duties genuinely match the occupation.
Can an Australian employer sponsor a UK accountant?
Yes. Accounting occupations are on the Core Skills Occupation List, although caveats apply to some codes for the 482 and 186 Direct Entry pathways.
Do UK accountants need an English test for the skills assessment?
Accounting assessing bodies include English proficiency in their assessment and may accept certain passports or require a test. Check the current rules of your chosen body.
What subjects must an accounting degree cover for Australian assessment?
Assessing bodies typically look for core areas such as financial accounting, management accounting, audit, taxation, business law, finance, economics and accounting information systems.
Is accounting a priority occupation for visa processing?
Accounting is not one of the priority sectors under the processing directions that took effect on 19 September 2026, so processing may be slower than for healthcare or construction occupations.
Should my partner be the main applicant instead?
If your partner works in an occupation with stronger invitation prospects, making them the main applicant may improve your chances, and you may contribute partner points.
