Can UK Graduate Visa Holders Apply for Australia PR in 2026?

Can UK Graduate Visa Holders Apply for Australia PR in 2026

If you are in the UK on a Graduate visa and wondering whether Australia could be your next move, the short answer is yes. UK Graduate visa holders can apply for Australia PR in 2026, and many international graduates do exactly that. Australia does not look at your UK visa when deciding whether you qualify, which surprises many people. It looks at you: your occupation, your qualifications, your age, your English ability and the points you can score.

That makes the Graduate visa a useful window rather than a requirement. You can work in the UK without sponsorship during this period. You can use the time to build skilled experience, take an English test, gather documents and complete a skills assessment while your UK status is stable. This guide explains how Australian permanent residency works for UK graduates. It covers which visas are realistic, how the points test treats a UK degree and what changed in 2026.

Can UK Graduate Visa Holders Apply for Australia PR? The Direct Answer

Yes. No rule stops a UK Graduate visa holder from lodging an Expression of Interest (EOI) for an Australian skilled visa or from being granted permanent residency. Australia’s points-tested skilled visas can be applied for from outside Australia, so you can apply while living and working in the UK.

Your Graduate visa does not give you an advantage either. Australia does not recognise it as a pathway, it earns no points and it does not replace any Australian requirement. You must meet the same core criteria as every other skilled applicant:

  • Be under 45 years of age when you are invited to apply
  • Nominate an occupation on the relevant Australian skilled occupation list
  • Hold a suitable skills assessment for that occupation from the designated assessing authority
  • Have at least Competent English
  • Score at least 65 points on the points test
  • Receive an invitation through SkillSelect
  • Meet health and character requirements

Meeting these minimums makes you eligible. It does not guarantee an invitation. Invitations depend on how your points and occupation compare with other candidates in the pool at the time of each invitation round.

Why Your Nationality Matters More Than Your UK Visa

The UK Graduate visa is for international students who have completed an eligible UK degree, so most holders are not British citizens. This matters because some Australian concessions depend on the passport you hold, not on where you live or studied.

English language requirements

For skilled visas, Australia treats holders of passports from the UK, the Republic of Ireland, the USA, Canada and New Zealand as having Competent English. If you hold a different passport, you will normally need to take an approved English test. This applies even if you completed your entire degree in English at a UK university. Our guide to English test exemption rules for UK citizens explains exactly who is covered.

Even applicants who are exempt usually take a test anyway, because Competent English earns zero points. Proficient English adds 10 points and Superior English adds 20. That difference often decides whether someone waits in the pool or receives an invitation. Approved tests include IELTS, PTE Academic and other tests accepted by the Department of Home Affairs. If you are preparing for PTE, check the current PTE score required for Australia PR before you book, because PTE score equivalencies were revised in August 2025.

Access to other Australian visas

British passport holders also have access to Australia’s Working Holiday arrangements on generous terms. Most international graduates on a UK Graduate visa either cannot use the Working Holiday visa (subclass 417) or fall under a different programme with tighter conditions. For them, the points-tested skilled visas and employer sponsorship are the main routes.

Australia PR Pathways Available to UK Graduates

Three points-tested visas form the core of General Skilled Migration. Employer sponsorship is a fourth option for anyone who can secure an Australian job offer.

Visa Status Sponsorship needed Points bonus Key point for UK graduates
Skilled Independent (subclass 189) Permanent None None Most competitive; offers full freedom to live anywhere in Australia
Skilled Nominated (subclass 190) Permanent State or territory nomination +5 Each state sets its own criteria and occupation priorities
Skilled Work Regional (subclass 491) Provisional (5 years), with a path to PR through subclass 191 State nomination or eligible relative in a designated regional area +15 You must live and work in regional Australia
Skills in Demand (subclass 482) leading to subclass 186 Temporary, then permanent Australian employer Not points-tested Requires a job offer from an approved sponsor

Subclass 189: the independent route

The Skilled Independent 189 visa gives permanent residency without a sponsor. It is the visa most UK graduates hope for. It is also the hardest to get, because invitations go to the highest-ranked candidates in each occupation. Recent rounds have often invited candidates well above the 65-point minimum.

Subclass 190: state nomination

State nomination adds 5 points and gives you access to occupations that a state or territory is actively seeking. Each state runs its own programme, and some give preference to people already living there. Read our breakdown of 190 visa requirements for UK applicants to see how state criteria work for people applying from the UK.

Subclass 491: the regional route

The Skilled Work Regional 491 visa adds 15 points, which can make a borderline profile competitive. It is a provisional visa. Permanent residency comes later through subclass 191, once you have lived and worked in a designated regional area for at least three years and met the income requirement. Be aware that the regional allocation has shrunk sharply for 2026–27 (see the 2026 changes section below).

Core Eligibility Requirements Explained

Age

You must be under 45 at the time of invitation. Age also drives your score: applicants aged 25 to 32 receive the maximum 30 points, so most graduates are in a strong position on this factor. If you are approaching 33 or 40, timing matters, because your age points drop at those birthdays.

Occupation lists

Your nominated occupation must appear on the list that applies to your chosen visa. The 189 visa uses the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL). Visas 190 and 491 can draw on broader lists, subject to each state’s own occupation priorities. Choose the occupation that genuinely matches your qualification and duties. A mismatch is one of the most common reasons for a negative skills assessment.

Skills assessment

A positive skills assessment confirms that your qualifications, and sometimes your work experience, meet Australian standards for your occupation. Each occupation has a designated assessing authority. Examples include Engineers Australia, the Australian Computer Society (ACS), VETASSESS, CPA Australia, CA ANZ, IPA, ANMAC and AITSL. Our skills assessment guide for Australia PR covers each body’s process in detail.

Requirements vary widely, which matters for new graduates:

  • Engineers: The UK is a signatory to the Washington Accord. Graduates of accredited UK engineering degrees may be able to use an accredited-qualification pathway rather than preparing a full Competency Demonstration Report.
  • ICT professionals: The ACS assesses how closely your degree relates to your nominated occupation. It may require relevant work experience before it considers you skilled.
  • Many VETASSESS occupations: Relevant employment is often required in addition to your qualification, so a fresh graduate with no experience may not yet qualify.

A skills assessment is generally valid for three years, unless the assessing authority specifies a shorter period.

Health and character

You and any family members included in your application must pass health examinations with an approved panel physician. You must also provide police certificates from each country where you have lived for 12 months or more in the last 10 years since turning 16. For most Graduate visa holders, this means a UK police certificate from ACRO plus a certificate from your home country.

How the Points Test Works for a UK Graduate

The Australia PR points system rewards age, English, qualifications, experience and a few other factors. Several categories are only available to people who studied or worked in Australia. UK graduates need to build their score from the factors that remain.

Factor Criteria Points
Age 18–24 / 25–32 / 33–39 / 40–44 25 / 30 / 25 / 15
English Competent / Proficient / Superior 0 / 10 / 20
Skilled employment outside Australia (last 10 years) 3–4 years / 5–7 years / 8–10 years 5 / 10 / 15
Qualification Doctorate / Bachelor’s or Master’s / Diploma or trade 20 / 15 / 10
Partner Single or partner is an Australian citizen or PR / Partner with skills assessment and Competent English / Partner with Competent English only 10 / 10 / 5
Credentialled community language NAATI CCL test passed 5
Nomination State nomination (190) / Regional nomination (491) 5 / 15

Australian study, regional study, the Professional Year and the specialist education qualification all require study in Australia, so a UK degree cannot claim them. A UK master’s degree also scores the same 15 points as a bachelor’s. Only a doctorate earns more.

Example: a typical UK Graduate visa holder

Consider a 27-year-old engineer with a UK master’s degree, one year of post-study work and Superior English, applying as a single person:

  • Age: 30 points
  • Superior English: 20 points
  • Master’s degree: 15 points
  • Single: 10 points
  • Work experience (under 3 years): 0 points

That gives 75 points for a 189 visa, 80 with state nomination and 90 with regional nomination. With Proficient rather than Superior English, the same person would have 65 points. That is eligible, but often not competitive for 189. This example shows why the English test is usually the biggest single lever for UK graduates. You can test your own profile with our Australia PR points calculator.

Does Work Experience on a Graduate Visa Count?

It can, under the right conditions. For points purposes, the work generally needs to be paid and at least 20 hours a week. It must be in your nominated occupation or a closely related one, and it must take place after the date your assessing authority considers you skilled. Graduate visa holders can work full-time, so a graduate-level role in your field can count.

The challenge is duration. You need at least three years of skilled overseas employment in the last 10 years to earn any experience points. Most Graduate visa holders have two years or less in the UK. Experience can still strengthen your skills assessment, even when it earns no points. If you switch to a Skilled Worker visa and continue in the same occupation, your experience keeps building towards the three-year threshold. Why the Australian 485 Graduate Visa Is Not an Option

Many applicants confuse the UK Graduate visa with Australia’s Temporary Graduate 485 visa. The two are unrelated. The 485 is only for people who recently completed eligible study in Australia and meet the Australian study requirement. A UK degree does not qualify, however recent, so UK Graduate visa holders must use the skilled or employer-sponsored routes instead.

What Changed for Australia PR in 2026

Several developments in 2026 affect UK-based applicants:

  • More 189 places, fewer regional places: The 2026–27 Migration Program keeps the total at 185,000 places. Skilled Independent places rose from 16,900 to 21,090, while the regional category (491 and 494) fell to 14,110 places from 33,000.
  • New processing priorities: From 19 September 2026, Ministerial Direction 122 sets the order in which skilled visas, including 189, 190 and 491, are processed. Occupations in construction, healthcare, teaching, agriculture, resources and some related sectors receive top priority wherever the applicant is. Applicants already in Australia rank ahead of most offshore applicants. For UK-based applicants in other sectors, processing may take longer.
  • Higher fees: Visa application charges rose by around 25% on 1 July 2026.
  • Points test reform announced but not in force: The May 2026 Federal Budget confirmed a redesign of the points test to favour younger, more skilled and better-educated migrants. No start date or new point values have been legislated, so the current test still applies.
  • Invitation rounds: The last fully published 189 round was on 4 June 2026. The first round of the 2026–27 programme year was held on 15 October 2026, with official results still pending at the time of writing.

On the UK side, the Graduate visa will be shortened from two years to 18 months for bachelor’s and master’s applications made on or after 1 January 2027. If you are graduating soon, you may have less time in the UK to prepare your Australian application.

Step-by-Step: From UK Graduate Visa to Australia PR

  1. Confirm your occupation. Match your degree and duties to an occupation on the relevant list, and identify its assessing authority.
  2. Calculate your points honestly. Count only what you can prove with documents on the date of invitation.
  3. Take your English test. Aim for Proficient at minimum and Superior if possible. Results generally count for points for three years.
  4. Apply for your skills assessment. Prepare transcripts, degree certificates and employment references in the format your assessing authority requires.
  5. Submit your EOI in SkillSelect. Select the visas you want to be considered for, and apply separately to any state that runs its own nomination process. Our guide on getting an Australia PR invitation from the UK explains how invitations are issued. An EOI stays active for two years.
  6. Lodge your visa application. Once invited, you have 60 days to lodge a complete application with supporting documents.
  7. Complete health and character checks. Arrange medical examinations and police certificates when requested.
  8. Manage your UK status while you wait. Your Australian application has no effect on your UK permission. The Graduate visa cannot be extended, so plan a switch to another UK visa if you need to stay in the UK beyond its expiry.

Costs to Budget For

Cost item Amount (from 1 July 2026)
Subclass 189 base application charge AUD 6,135
Subclass 190 or 491 base application charge AUD 6,140
Additional applicant aged 18 or over (189) AUD 3,070
English test, skills assessment, medicals, police certificates, translations Varies by provider and assessing authority

Visa application charges are usually reviewed every 1 July, and they are not refunded if an application is refused. Always confirm current charges with the Department of Home Affairs before lodging.

Common Mistakes UK Graduates Make

  • Assuming the Graduate visa helps: It adds nothing to an Australian application, so plan around Australian criteria from the start.
  • Claiming experience the assessing authority does not count: Experience before your skill-met date, part-time roles under 20 hours a week and unrelated jobs usually do not qualify.
  • Choosing the wrong occupation: A poorly matched occupation can lead to a negative skills assessment and wasted fees.
  • Overclaiming points in an EOI: If you cannot prove your claimed points at the invitation date, your visa application can be refused.
  • Letting documents expire: English results and skills assessments have limited validity, so track their dates against expected invitation rounds.
  • Ignoring your UK visa timeline: Australian processing can take many months, so keep your UK status secure while you wait.

For practical ideas, see our guide on how to improve your Australia PR points before invitation.

Options If Your Points Are Not Yet Competitive

  • Retake your English test: Moving from Proficient to Superior adds 10 points, and recent reform signals suggest English will remain heavily weighted.
  • Build experience on a Skilled Worker visa: Reaching three years of skilled employment unlocks 5 points and strengthens your profile.
  • Pass the NAATI CCL test: This can add 5 points if you speak an eligible community language, and the test can be taken online.
  • Use partner points: A partner with Competent English adds 5 points, or 10 with a suitable skills assessment.
  • Target state or regional nomination: The 190 and 491 visas add 5 and 15 points but come with state-specific conditions.
  • Secure employer sponsorship: A job offer under the Skills in Demand visa can lead to permanent residency without the points test.
  • British passport holders aged 18–35: The Working Holiday 417 visa lets you gain Australian work experience and approach employers directly while you are there.

Is 2026 a Good Time for UK Graduates to Apply?

For the right profile, yes. The increase in 189 places is a positive sign for independent applicants, and the points test you face today is known. A future redesign may score some profiles differently. The 2026 settings also favour priority sectors and onshore applicants, and the regional route has narrowed. A clear strategy matters more than it did a few years ago.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply for Australia PR while I am on a UK Graduate visa?

Yes. Australia's points-tested skilled visas (189, 190 and 491) can be applied for from outside Australia, so you can lodge an Expression of Interest and apply while living in the UK on a Graduate visa, provided you meet Australia's age, occupation, skills assessment, English and points requirements.

Does a UK Graduate visa give extra points for Australia PR?

No. The UK Graduate visa is not recognised in the Australian points test and adds no points. Australia assesses your age, English, qualifications, skilled employment, partner status and nomination, not your UK immigration status.

Do I need IELTS or PTE for Australia PR if I studied in the UK?

Usually yes. Studying in English in the UK does not exempt you. Only holders of UK, Irish, US, Canadian and New Zealand passports are treated as having Competent English, and most applicants take a test anyway because Proficient and Superior English add 10 and 20 points.

Does a UK master's degree give more Australia PR points than a bachelor's degree?

No. A recognised bachelor's or master's degree earns 15 points. Only a doctorate earns more, at 20 points.

Can work experience on a UK Graduate visa count towards Australia PR points?

It can count if it is paid, at least 20 hours a week, in your nominated or a closely related occupation, and after the date your assessing authority considers you skilled. You need at least three years of skilled overseas employment to earn points, which most Graduate visa holders have not yet reached.

Can UK Graduate visa holders apply for the Australian 485 Temporary Graduate visa?

No. The 485 visa is only for people who have recently completed eligible study in Australia. A UK degree does not meet the Australian study requirement.

What is the minimum points score for Australia PR in 2026?

The minimum is 65 points for the 189, 190 and 491 visas, but invitations are competitive and many occupations have recently required scores well above 65.

How much does it cost to apply for Australia PR in 2026?

From 1 July 2026, the base application charge is AUD 6,135 for the subclass 189 and AUD 6,140 for the 190 or 491, plus charges for family members and costs for English tests, skills assessments, medicals and police certificates.

Which Australia PR visa is best for UK graduates with lower points?

The 190 Skilled Nominated visa adds 5 points and the 491 Skilled Work Regional visa adds 15 points, so state or regional nomination can help a borderline profile. Each state sets its own criteria, so suitability depends on your occupation.

What happens if my UK Graduate visa expires while my Australia PR application is being processed?

Your Australian application does not affect your UK permission. The Graduate visa cannot be extended, so you would need to switch to another UK visa, such as a Skilled Worker visa, if you want to remain in the UK while you wait.

Is the Australian PR points test changing in 2026?

A reform was announced in the May 2026 Federal Budget to favour younger, more skilled and better-educated migrants, but no start date or new points values have been legislated, so the current points test still applies.

Can I include my partner in my Australia PR application from the UK?

Yes. Your partner can be included as a secondary applicant, and their English ability or skills assessment can add 5 or 10 points to your score if they meet the requirements.
