How Australia PR English Test Works For UK Passport Holders If you have a British passport, you may be able to go to Australia without doing an English exam at all. The rule is simple but the exception to it is one big one. This is only the minimum standard. There are varying rules once you advance into the points-tested skilled migration program. Here is how exactly the Australia PR English test works for UK passport holders in 2026, what are the scores right now, and when is sitting an exam still the intelligent thing to do.
Do UK Citizens Need an English Test for Australia PR?
No, not for the minimum requirement. The Department of Home Affairs recognises a UK passport as evidence of Competent English. You can even use a valid passport from Canada, New Zealand, Ireland and the USA. You simply upload your passport – no booking, no exam fee, no waiting for results.
The above applies to the primary skilled visa subclasses that offer PR: the Skilled Independent visa (189), the Skilled Nominated visa (190) and the Skilled Work Regional visa (491). It is only the English requirement; your skills assessment, age, qualifications and work experience will still be assessed separately. An important nuance to be aware of is that you will need to be a citizen of the UK and have a valid British citizen passport. A British National (Overseas) passport is not eligible, so BN(O) passport holders will still need to undertake an approved English test.

Where the Exemption Stops: English Points for Skilled Migration
Because the scoring is a competition, there is not a pass or fail cut-off. You need a certain number to get into the pool, but invitations are sent to the highest scorers.
English can get you plenty of points fast, and the passport exemption will cost you almost all of them.
- Competent English – the entry level. 0 points, as evidenced by your British passport.
- Proficient English – 10 points, requires you to have an approved test result.
- Superior English – 20 points, also requires an approved test result.
Important Points to Remember
- You can’t upgrade from the passport route. There is no paperwork to make a British passport worth 10 or 20 points.
- Your lowest component is your true level. Three strong components and one weak one still cost you 20 points.
- Results are valid for three years after you take the test.
- Online and at-home testing are no good. You must test at a secure exam venue.
For most British applicants, this is often the decider. Twenty points is sometimes the difference between an invitation this year and a long wait. A native speaker who prepares well for the format can have a fair chance at Superior English, and that tends to be the cheapest 20 points you can get on the points test.
PTE Score for Australia PR in 2026: Competent, Proficient and Superior
The most common test for skilled migration is PTE Academic as it has a fast result turnaround and the scoring is computerised. Pay attention to the version: PTE Academic is the test recognised, PTE Core is not. There are two points here. Both writing and speaking are much more prominent than reading and listening these days so make sure you allocate more time and concentration to these two elements during your preparation. Secondly, with each component being evaluated independently, an aggregate figure is worthless if you’re lacking in one area. On or before 6 August 2025, the target scores in each element were consistently 50, 65 and 79.
You can also use these approved options: TOEFL iBT (active under the Australia pathway), Cambridge C1 Advanced, CELPIP General, Language Cert Academic, Michigan English Test and OET (Healthcare professionals). IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training can be used at the same scores.
When a British Applicant Should Still Sit an Exam
It saves money and it can save you time – but it’s not always the best option. So when is going the test route the obvious answer?
Your Points Are Borderline
If you are only a few points below recent invitation cut-offs for your occupation, saving 10 or 20 English points is the fastest route.
You Are Seeking State or Territory Nomination
Some 190 and 491 nomination streams require a higher English standard than the national minimum, and having a passport alone won’t qualify for those categories.
Your Professional Body Requires It
Registration boards for nurses, teachers, engineers and others have their own language proof requirements which differ from the visa rules.
Your Partner Is Not British
Partner points require ‘Competent English’ from your partner and any dependants aged 18 or over will have to pay the English Education Charge.
If None of the Above Applies
If none of the above applies to you and your points are comfortably above the required levels, passport is the way to go.
