What is the 804 Visa?

The 804 visa Australia is a non-contributory aged parent visa that offers permanent residency to qualified parents of Australians. This visa falls under the family migration stream and is best option for older parents who meet the 804 visa age requirement and pass the balance of family test.

Unlike the aged parent contributory visa, the 804 visa has lower upfront costs but a longer processing times. It’s also known as the parent visa subclass 804.

Who Can Apply for the 804 Aged Parent Visa?

The 804 Aged Parent Visa allows older parents of Australian citizens to live permanently in Australia. But to apply, you need to meet various important requirements.

  • 1. Age Requirement
    You must be old enough to receive the Age Pension in Australia.
    As of now, the qualifying age is:
  • 66.5 to 67 years which depends on your date of birth.

This is known as the 804 visa age requirement or aged parent visa 804 age requirement.

2. Be in Australia When You Apply

  • The 804 visa is an onshore visa.
  • You must be physically present in Australia when you are apply for the visa and a decision is made on your application.

3. Have a Sponsor
You must be sponsored by a settled child who is:

  • An Australian citizen.
  • Living in Australia for at least 2 years or more
  • Willing to provide financial and accommodation support for you

The sponsor usually needs to sign a sponsorship undertaking.

4. Pass the Balance of Family Test
This test checks your connection to Australia through your children.

  • To pass, you must meet one of the following:
  • At least half of your children live permanently in Australia, or
  • You have more children living in Australia than in any other single country
  •  Step-children and adopted children are also counted.

Examples:

4 children total → At least 2 must be living in Australia permanently

3 children → 2 in Australia, 1 in another country = You pass the test

5. Health Requirements
All applicants must complete medical examinations to show they are in reasonably good health.

This includes:

  • Chest X-rays
  • Blood tests
  • General health check-ups

Health checks are valid for 12 months.

6. Character Requirements
You’ll need to provide:

  • Police clearance certificates from every country you’ve lived in for 12 months or more in the last 10 years
  • This applies to all applicants aged 16 and above.

7. Have No Outstanding Debts to the Australian Government

  • If you owe any money to the Australian government (like hospital fees or visa costs), it must be paid back before the visa is granted.

8. Sign the Australian Values Statement
This confirms that:

  • You understand Australian laws, culture, and values
  • You agree to respect and follow them

9. Apply Using the Correct Application Form

  • You must submit the paper-based 804 visa application form.
  • This is Form 47PA along with Form 40 (for the sponsor).
  • It must be mailed or submitted in person. Online applications are not available for subclass 804.

10. Understand the Long Processing Time
The subclass 804 processing time is currently 30 years or more.

  • Yes, it’s a very long wait, but you can stay in Australia on a subclass 804 bridging visa while your application is being processed.

11. Know Your Bridging Visa Conditions
Once you apply for the 804 visa, you will likely receive a Bridging Visa A (BVA). This allows you to:
