804 Visa Australia – Aged Parent Visa for UK Citizens

GIEC Global UK helps UK citizens apply for the 804 Aged Parent Visa Australia with confidence and free expert advice.

What is the 804 Visa?

The 804 visa Australia, also known as the Aged Parent Visa Subclass 804, is a non-contributory permanent residency visa for older parents of Australian citizens or permanent residents. If you’re a UK citizen with children settled in Australia then this visa offers a way to live with them permanently.
The 804 visa Australia allows eligible parents to stay in Australia permanently. It is part of the family migration stream and is ideal for UK parents who:

  • Who are already in Australia on a temporary visa (such as a Visitor visa)

  • Who meet the Australian age requirement for the Age Pension

  • Who pass the balance of family test (meaning at least half your children live in Australia)

  • Who have a child willing to sponsor them

  • Who meet health and character requirements

Key Benefits for UK Citizens

  • Applicants can live in Australia permanently

  • Applicants can access Medicare and other public services

  • Applicants can stay with your children and grandchildren long term

  • Applicants can apply for citizenship when eligible

How to Speed Up 804 Visa Processing Time

The Aged Parent Visa (Subclass 804) is a queue-based visa, meaning applicants are placed in a long waiting line. While you cannot skip or accelerate the queue, you can reduce delays when your file is finally processed.

If you or your parents do not want to wait decades, you can withdraw the 804 application anytime and apply for a faster option such as: Contributory Aged Parent Visa (Subclass 864)

✅ 1. Lodge a complete application with all documents

Many 804 visa delays happen because the Department requests missing documents.
To avoid this, ensure you include:

  • Identity documents

  • Birth certificates

  • Police clearances

  • Health documents

  • Family composition forms

  • Assurance of Support evidence

  • Proof you meet “aged parent” criteria

  • Sponsor’s documents

A decision-ready application reduces internal delays.

✅ 2. Respond immediately to any Department requests

If the Department asks for:

  • Extra documents

  • Updated police checks

  • New health exams

  • Additional evidence

Respond as quickly as possible. Every late response adds weeks or months.

✅ 3. Keep all police clearances valid

Police clearances expire in 12 months.
If your clearance expires during assessment, they will ask for a new one — causing delays.

✅ 4. Complete health examinations early when requested

804 visa applicants are usually not required to complete health until later, but when asked:

✔ Book medicals ASAP
✔ Upload results quickly

Delaying medicals slows down the final decision.

✅ 5. Ensure the Assurance of Support (AoS) is ready

For finalisation, your sponsor must provide an Assurance of Support through Services Australia.

To avoid delays:

  • Make sure the sponsor meets income requirements

  • Prepare tax returns and payslips early

  • Respond quickly to Services Australia assessments

AoS delays are one of the most common bottlenecks.

✅ 6. Keep contact details updated

If the Department cannot reach you, your application may be paused.

Update:

  • Email

  • Phone

  • Residential address

  • Sponsor details

What's the Same:

Both visas offer identical benefits once granted:

  • Permanent residency in Australia
  • Access to Medicare (public healthcare)
  • Ability to work and study
  • Travel in and out of Australia
  • Pathway to citizenship
Which One to Choose? The main deciding factor is whether you can afford the significantly higher fees for the 864 visa in exchange for a much faster processing time. The deciding factor would be whether or not you are prepared to pay for private medical care for the next 30 years in the case of the 804 or for the next 12 years in the case of the 864, since Medicare access only comes after the visa is granted.

804 Visa Bridging Visa – What You Should Know

When you apply for the 804 visa, you won’t get permanent residency right away, but you’ll be granted a bridging visa that keeps you legally in Australia while you wait. This parent visa bridging visa can allow:

  • Unlimited stay in Australia
  • You will get Work rights (check your specific visa conditions)
  • You can access to public healthcare (Medicare)
  • You will get travel rights (with a Bridging Visa B)

If you’re granted a subclass 804 bridging visa then it’s important to know your visa conditions, especially if you want to travel.

How Much Does the 804 Visa Cost?

The visa 804 cost is much lower than contributory parent visas. As of now:

  • First instalment: Approx. AUD 4,990*

  • Second instalment: NIL (unlike contributory visas)

This makes the non contributory aged parent visa Australia an affordable option for many families, though the wait time is the trade-off.
